Tuesday 20th March, 2007   Freestyle Session

Andy Lam (3rd Dan Wado Ryu) visited Kobukan on Tuesday 20th March to teach competition freestyle techniques. The session was very well attended and after the customary warm up Andy put the class through its paces by demonstrating a variety of freestyle techniques and then instructing us to pair up and practise.

He stressed the importance of mobility, changing stance from right to left and moving to the side to avoid attacks rather than maintaining the traditional "straight line" approach. Competition freestyle incorporates a high zenkutsu dachi stance with participants continually shifting their position with a forward/backward "bouncing" movement before launching into a 2 or 3 combination attack.

This is rather un-Shotokan like but does have the advantage of enabling participants to make distance both in attack and when defending. It also provides scope for "moving off the line". Combination techniques used were gyaku zuki, gizami zuki, gyaku zuki (followed by mawashi geri, if the defender moved out of range).

Andy then explained the importance of bag work and demonstrated this with Peter Crawford who had to hammer the bag with punching combinations, mawashi geris from both legs, ushiro mawashi geris from both legs whilst ducking under the bag when Andy launched it at him. Peter kept up a barrage of attacks for over a minute to spontaneous applause from the class.

The class cooled down from this intense work out with kata practice: heian yondan, tekki shodan, empi and chinte. Our thanks to Andy Lam for a very interesting lesson and physical workout, giving us an insight into competition style karate and the training of Wado Ryu.
